Torrey Pines Is Closed Until March. The Trails Off Carmel Valley Road Are Still Open.

November 5, 2026

The Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve has been closed to all visitors since September 22, and California State Parks expects full access to return by about March 1, 2027. All of the reserve's own trails are closed, along with the upper parking lots and the Lodge. That includes Guy Fleming, Parry Grove, Razor Point and Broken Hill. The usual morning loop above the bluffs is gone for the winter.

What stays open sits at the north end of Torrey Pines, the end closest to Carmel Valley. The State Parks reserve page lists its current conditions as "TPSNR Main Trails: CLOSED" and "TPSNR Extension: OPEN." The North Beach lot, which you reach from Carmel Valley Road, is open too. So is the trailer where the park's staff are working until March. For the next four months, most of what's still running at Torrey Pines is on the Carmel Valley side.

What closed on September 22, and what did not

The State Parks construction project page lays out the sequence. The park road closed to vehicles on Monday, September 21, and so did the Lodge and the Trail Interpretive Kiosk in the west parking lot. The next day the reserve closed to everyone, including people on foot and on bikes.

Part of Torrey Pines Status through February 2027
Main reserve trails Closed
Beach Trail staircase Closed
Lodge and upper parking lots Closed
South Beach and North Beach lots Open
Torrey Pines State Beach Open
Torrey Pines Extension trails Open

State Parks describes the North Beach lot as the lot "from Carmel Valley Rd," with beach access and remote parking for the trails. It charges a demand-based day-use fee of $10 to $25 per vehicle, or you can use a valid annual California State Parks Vehicle Day Use Pass. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that State Parks doesn't issue refunds while a park is closed, but annual passes stay valid at every other state park.

Four short trails, about two miles in all

The Torrey Pines Extension is a separate parcel in Del Mar Heights. State Parks lists four trails there:

  • Mar Scenic Trail, half a mile, follows the seasonal creek through the Extension.
  • Daughters of the American Revolution Trail, called the DAR Trail, half a mile, looks across the marsh to the main reserve and out to the ocean.
  • Margaret Fleming Nature Trail, three-quarters of a mile, runs through coastal sage scrub.
  • Red Ridge Loop Trail, a third of a mile, overlooks the lagoon, the main reserve and its geologic formations.

The four trails add up to a little over two miles. Two of them face the closed reserve. From the DAR Trail and the Red Ridge Loop you look across at the bluffs you can't walk this season, so the views from the Extension are some of the best this winter offers of the main reserve.

The Extension trail map shows three ways in. You can take Del Mar Scenic Parkway from Carmel Valley Road, or Mar Scenic Drive or Mira Montana Drive from Del Mar Heights Road. The Del Mar Scenic Parkway entrance is the one Carmel Valley residents can reach without crossing over to Del Mar Heights Road. The rules on the map are brief:

  • Street parking only
  • Open 7 a.m. to sunset
  • No dogs, no bicycles, no food, no smoking

The no-dogs rule matters for a lot of morning walks, and there's a nearby preserve that allows leashed dogs, covered further down.

The reserve's staff have moved north as well

The closure moved more than the hikers. The Torrey Pines Docent Society's November 2026 newsletter, the Torreyana, reports that the park aide staff are working out of a trailer in the North Beach parking lot while the reserve is closed. Maintenance staff are expected to join them soon. The same issue includes photos of construction along the park road and around the Lodge, taken October 17 by Supervising Ranger Stephanie Adams.

The docents' regular public programming is on hold. The Society's Mindful Walks are suspended until March 1, 2027, and the Lodge stays closed until about the same date.

One new program starts during the closure anyway, and it's at the Extension. The Torreyana announces Nature Journaling as a new program open to the public. It runs on the second Friday of each month from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. The first session is Friday, November 13, 2026. The group meets at the Extension entrance on Del Mar Scenic Parkway, next to the tennis courts. The planning team includes Interpreter I Rowan Jackman, who is also on the park aide staff working from North Beach.

If the second-Friday pattern continues, the sessions during the closure fall on:

  1. Friday, November 13, 2026
  2. Friday, December 11, 2026
  3. Friday, January 8, 2027
  4. Friday, February 12, 2027

The meeting point is about as close to Carmel Valley as any part of Torrey Pines gets. The same newsletter has a seasonal reason to bring binoculars. Its Bird of the Month is the Red-breasted Nuthatch, a small songbird that sometimes shows up at Torrey Pines in fall and can stay into spring. It has a call the newsletter describes as a "tooting clown horn."

Why the work happens in winter, two years running

This is the second winter in a row that the Extension has been the open part of Torrey Pines. The Union-Tribune reported that phase one ran from November 2025 to February 2026. That phase closed the main access road, the upper lots, the visitor center and the main trails, while the beach lots, the state beach and the Extension trails stayed open.

The timing is deliberate. The Union-Tribune cited a staff report saying the construction periods avoid the breeding season of the California gnatcatcher, a special-status species found in the reserve. It also quoted the Torrey Pines Conservancy, which said the sequencing "allows the most disruptive elements to be completed methodically, rather than through reactive closures later."

Phase two adds more utilities and a new restroom. It also improves accessible parking and paths and replaces the park road from the west parking lot to the reserve's south boundary. State Parks says the project includes new gas, water, wastewater and communication lines, plus an accessible pedestrian path from the upper parking lot to the restroom and Lodge. According to the Union-Tribune, the larger goal is to replace aging sewer, water and electrical systems that are up to six decades old, and to retire utilities that run through culturally and biologically sensitive areas.

The reserve that reopens in March should be easier to reach from its west lot than the one that closed in September.

When the walk includes a dog

Dogs aren't allowed anywhere in the Extension, so a walk with a dog has to go somewhere else. Del Mar Mesa Preserve is City of San Diego open space, and the City's open-space rules require dogs to be on a leash.

Work is underway there this fall too. The Friends of Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve report that a vernal pool restoration project led by the Chaparral Lands Conservancy resumed on Tuesday, October 13. Crews are improving existing vernal pools and creating new ones inside the fenced Bowtie Trail perimeter and along an old road cut toward the east Bowtie and Fire Road intersection. Construction vehicles reach the site by the Powerline Trail from the end of Park Village Road. The Friends say trails may close briefly and intermittently during work hours, but authorized trails stay open and won't be permanently affected. If you walk in from Park Village Road during work hours, you may share the start of the Powerline Trail with work vehicles.

Through March 1

Here's how the season lays out. The Extension is open from 7 a.m. to sunset, and its trailhead on Del Mar Scenic Parkway is a short drive down Carmel Valley Road. The North Beach lot is open, and the park aide staff are working there. Nature Journaling meets at the Extension entrance on the second Friday of each month. The main reserve, the Lodge and the Beach Trail staircase are expected to reopen around March 1, 2027. Updates are posted on the State Parks Torrey Pines page.

When the reserve reopens in March, the work done this winter will be easiest to see in the west lot, with its new restroom, accessible parking and the path to the Lodge.
